GOVERNOR’S FINAL BUDGET ACTION FLATTENS PROJECT PIPELINE AND ELIMINATES
SCHEDULED MAINENANCE AND INSTRUCTIONAL EQUIPMENT FUNDS —
The Governor took his final actions on the 2001-02 Budget by submitting an
extensive list of vetoes. The major action from the standpoint of the community
colleges is the elimination of the 34 facility projects that were added to the
budget by the Legislative Conference Committee. Efforts to sustain that action
were unsuccessful. The list below indicates the projects that were eliminated,
on the basis that the remaining funds in the community college share of
Proposition 1A might be needed to finish already approved projects. In reality,
it will likely result in another bottleneck when another bond is approved by the
voters.
The other major action taken by the Governor was the elimination of $49
million for scheduled maintenance and $49 million for Instructional Equipment
and Library Materials. Justification for this focused on the absence of such
funding for UC and CSU and the tight fiscal constraints faced by the state.
